Malaysia was on Sunday shrouded with haze from forest fires on the Indonesian island of Sumatra causing “unhealthy” levels of pollution in six areas.
The 2013 Southeast Asian haze is affecting several countries in the Southeast Asian region, including Indonesia,Malaysia, and Singapore, starting in June 2013. On 19 June 2013, NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites captured images of smoke from illegal wildfires on the Indonesian island of Sumatra blowing east toward southern Malaysia and Singapore, causing thick clouds of haze in the region. As stated by a local Indonesian official, the source of the haze might be a 3,000 hectare peatland in Bengkalis Regency, Riau Province, which was set ablaze by an unknown factor on 9 June. As many as 187 hotspots were picked up by satellites on 18 June 2013, downing to 85 on 20 June 2013. Many of the hotspots are owned by palm oil companies or smallholder farmers who supply palm oil to these companies and use traditional slash-and-burn methods to clear their land for the next planting season.

We need Rain!!
Cloud seeding, a form of intentional weather modification, is the attempt to change the amount or type of precipitationthat falls from clouds, by dispersing substances into the air that serve as cloud condensation or ice nuclei, which alter the microphysical processes within the cloud. The usual intent is to increase precipitation (rain or snow), but hail and fog suppression are also widely practiced in airports.
On 20 June 2013, Indonesia said it will begin cloud-seeding operations following reports from Singapore that smog caused by forest and bush fires in Sumatra have disrupted daily activities in the neighboring country.
Here are four things that can help you survive the haze.
Surgical masks are not effective. “N95 masks are far more superior,” said respiratory expert Philip Eng. The mask protects the user from at least 95 per cent of smoke particles.
These are needed mostly by those with respiratory illnesses and prolonged exposure to the haze, and at very high PSI levels.
2. Air purifier and air conditioning
Air purifiers and air-conditioning are effective, said respiratory doctor Jim Teo Yeow Kwan. Both appliances have in-built air filtration mechanisms to filter the air. The high-efficiency particulate air, or Hepa, purifiers are recommended.
Air ionisers are useful but not as effective as the Hepa purifiers as ionisers do not keep out as much of the dust particles.
4. Wet or dry cloth
A wet cloth may filter out more dust particles than a dry one, noted Dr Teo, but both are not as effective as the N95 mask. Still, having your nose and mouth covered “is still better than nothing”.
